A Maryland Basketball Game Day in College Park: Where to Eat and What to Do
At some point on a basketball afternoon in College Park, the campus starts giving away what is about to happen. Maryland shirts multiply, Testudo acquires a fresh collection of offerings, and people who were casually eating lunch half an hour ago suddenly become very interested in the time.
A Maryland Terps basketball game can easily take up more than the hours inside XFINITY Center. Come earlier, and there is enough around campus for lunch, a walk, and a few UMD traditions without turning game day into an endurance event.
Start With Tipoff
Maryland plays its home basketball games at XFINITY Center. The 2026–27 Big Ten home calendar includes Michigan State, UCLA, USC, Illinois, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Indiana, Minnesota, and Northwestern.
Tip times and television assignments may be announced or adjusted separately, so check the official calendar before building the day. An earlier game leaves room for breakfast and a campus walk, while an evening tipoff opens up lunch and more time to wander.
Either way, work backward from tipoff rather than trying to fit the game into a fixed itinerary. That one decision shapes what fits for food, how much campus time you have, and whether the walk to XFINITY Center stays relaxed or turns into a sprint.
Parking Changes on Basketball Days
Maryland Transportation Services currently sells men’s basketball parking permits for Regents Drive Garage. Lot 1 offers a free option with a walk to XFINITY Center, while several lots near the arena restrict ordinary access before games.
The choice mostly comes down to cost versus walking. Regents Drive Garage is the more practical option if you would rather reserve parking in advance and start closer to the arena. Lot 1 saves the parking fee, but expect a longer walk across campus. Do not count on finding a closer lot once you get there, since basketball games change access around XFINITY Center.
If you are coming to the University of Maryland with several people, decide beforehand whether everyone is parking separately or making the trip together. Either choice is easier to sort out before game day than while everyone is comparing lot maps on their phones.
Eat Before You Get to the Arena
Most useful off-campus food choices sit closer to Baltimore Avenue than XFINITY Center, so eating first and heading toward the arena afterward makes more sense. The restaurants immediately near the stadium are limited, and the better options are a short drive or walk away in either direction.
For breakfast or an early game, Iron Rooster College Park opens at 7 a.m. The Board and Brew starts at 8 a.m. and combines breakfast and lunch with a board-game café, which feels appropriately competitive for a day that already has a scoreboard.
Later, Honey Pig BBQ brings Korean barbecue to Baltimore Avenue, while CAVA works when lunch needs to take up less of the afternoon. Once half the table starts checking the time between bites, lunch has probably gone on long enough.
Take the Long Way Through Campus
If this is your first UMD game day, leave some room between lunch and the arena. McKeldin Mall gives you the classic campus view, with McKeldin Library at one end and the Main Administration Building at the other.
Then find Testudo outside the library. Testudo is UMD’s diamondback terrapin mascot, a type of turtle for anyone not fluent in Maryland wildlife. Rubbing the bronze statue’s nose for luck is a campus tradition, and students leave offerings around him, especially during exams. Flowers, notes, and snacks tend to accumulate, so it is worth seeing what he has collected that day.
From there, Memorial Chapel is an easy addition if your walk takes you that way. McKeldin Mall, Testudo, and one more landmark give you plenty of campus context before the crowd starts pulling north toward XFINITY Center.
Then Head for XFINITY Center
XFINITY Center sits toward the northern end of campus, away from most Baltimore Avenue restaurants. Leave enough time for the final walk. The arena is farther from the food than most maps suggest, and nobody needs an accidental warm-up before taking their seat.
Gate A is the main public entrance, while Gate B serves as another general public entrance. Gates C and D handle ADA entry, and Gate E sits beside Terrapin Trail Garage. A quick look at your gate beforehand removes one more thing to figure out once you reach the arena.
The arena also has a clear-bag policy. Permitted clear bags can measure up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, while a one-gallon freezer bag or a small clutch up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches also qualifies. Backpacks and larger bags should stay behind. Finding out your bag has been benched before the game even starts is not the kind of Maryland basketball story anyone needs.
After the Final Buzzer
A night game doesn’t have to end at the arena doors, especially if dinner somehow became the thing everyone forgot about. The Board and Brew stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, leaving a reasonable window after most evening tipoffs.
College Park Diner gives a bit more room, running until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. That range covers most postgame situations, including the ones a deep run into overtime tends to create.
Still, confirm current hours before counting on either place after a late finish. Both are worth a quick check. Restaurant schedules shift, and overtime has very little respect for anyone who skipped dinner before the game.
Give Game Day More Than Two Hours
Before leaving, check the official game time, current parking information, arena policies, and restaurant hours. Those details can change and are far easier to sort out before several people are staring at one phone.
Beyond that, College Park does not need an elaborate game-day checklist. Eat somewhere you actually want to eat, walk through campus, pay your respects to Testudo, and head toward the arena with time to spare.
If nobody wants parking duty, sorting out the ride beforehand leaves one fewer decision for game day. Then only one genuinely difficult question remains: what exactly are you bringing Testudo?
